Martin was first and foremost a proud family man. He loved his family and dogs and was so proud of Matthew and Charlotte. His face lit up when he talked about them as they lived their dreams. At work Martin made a huge contribution to the University over many years in many different ways. A sharp intellect and dry sense of humour Martin would cut through the complexity and get to the point. Martin was someone I could go to and ask for advice that would be completely independent of politics. Whilst Martin was our PVC Research and Enterprise - he took on may other leadership roles in the university and across the City Region. It was in this space that Martin really demonstrated his full knowledge, skills and expertise in economic growth in cities and regions. He was amazing - bringing together business, politics and the world of academe across UWe and UoB. Martins magic was to identify the win, win, wins and to get everyone to believe that it was possible. His passion was the research arc that would link Cardiff, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge with a rail link that would allow a Technology Powerhouse on a global scale. My hope is that this might still be realised. Thank you Martin for your wisdom and contribution to UWE, UoB and the City Region.
