Richard Bond 26th February 2024

So shocked to hear of Martin’s sudden passing. Martin was my line-manager at UWE for six years prior to my retirement in 2021. He was always a kind, thoughtful and generous person, there when needed with helpful support and valuable insights but never micromanaging. His oversight of UWE’s REF2021 submission, which I managed, epitomised his approach – always there to listen, to advise and enable, willing to back difficult decisions and speak personally to staff affected. Martin carried his vast knowledge and experience of research lightly, dealing with challenges with patience, humour and calmness. He was able to connect and emphasise with researchers, and staff generally, at all levels, sharing his own experiences of a long successful career. At heart, I think he was a rather shy family man and it is to them that I offer my deepest condolences.
